Adventist school students share Jesus

At the beginning of 2009 Adventist members throughout North America were challenged to make this the Year of Evangelism. Here in the Southwestern Union, from the pulpit to the pew, many have eagerly responded to the challenge, and students in our schools are no exception. There are just too many stories to tell, but we’d like to share a few snippets of what K-12 students, with the help of their teachers and parents, are doing to tell others about Jesus. Read more...

Jaime Espinal, vice-president for evangelism for the Adventist-laymen’s Services and Industries (ASI) Southwestern Union chapter was in Medellin, Columbia, when he saw the need. He called Floyd Miller, a past president, and asked for his help in conducting reaping meetings. The two men had conducted meetings together in the Dominican Republic and in Mexico.  Read more...

With more than 1,500 in attendance, the Southwestern Union Ministries Convention was a tremendous success. It truly was “A Buffet of Ministries Training” as attendees selected seminars and presentations that enriched the ministries programs and needs at their churches. All weekend long there was abundant evidence of God’s presence in the meeting rooms, in the hallways, and on the faces of attendees as they realized more of their dream to serve God effectively. Adventist Community Services national convention

“Collaboration for Compassion,” a national convention hosted recently by Adventist Community Services (ACS), helped train participants to serve in the following areas: disaster response, tutoring and mentoring, crisis care, community development, Youth Empowered to Serve (Y.E.2S.), and elder care. The convention, which was held from June 29 to July 5, brought more than 260 enthusiastic Adventist volunteers to Albuquerque, N.Mex., to be challenged to develop their community service skills. ACS DR responds to Hurricane Dolly

Keene, TX: Hurricane Dolly pounded the South Texas Coast relentlessly July 23, 2008, as a Category 2 hurricane. Dolly very slowly moved inland, and what the 100 mph wind didn't blow away, the up to 20 inches of rain drenched. Today there were 6,550 people in emergency shelters due to the flooding that has ensued. On Thursday, July 24, Maria Weber, Adventist Community Services Disaster Response Area Coordinator for the Rio Grande Valley, reported that the flood waters are still rising. One estimate is that there has been $750 million dollars would of damage. Read more...

Home school leaders from across the Southwestern Union gathered at the union office on June 15-16 for the first annual Southwestern Union Home School Workshop. Featuring presentations by veteran home schoolers, such as Debbie Burghart from Little Rock, Ark., Suzanne Lutz from Albuquerque, N.Mex., and Kerrie Kimbrow and Karen Weber from the Keene, Tex., area, participants reviewed Seventh-day Adventist home school philosophy and practice as well as curriculum selection and development.
